I finally managed to get my hands on "the good stuff" from a company called Universal Plywoods http://universalply.com/en-us/contactus.aspx
They stock WISA birch made in the UPM factory in Finland http://www.upm.com/en/about-upm/our-company/history/Pages/default.aspx.
The product itself is of an excellent quality. Having purchased from them myself I can testify that their product is top rate. Better yet, they are very happy to supply single sheets to members of the public, so no hassles on that front.
I dealt with a very friendly lady called Belinda, and even met one of the business owners, both of who were very happy to give me some of their time and answer all the many questions I had.
These guys stock the following:
- Birch ply in a couple of different grades and thickness from 4mm up to 35mm.
- Pine ply in a couple of different grades and thicknesses.
- Marine ply in a couple different thicknesses.
- Oriented Strand Board (OSB) in a couple different thicknesses.
Now for the downsides:
1. They do not cut, and have no machines to do it for you. Therefore you purchase a whole sheet at a time.
2. They are not open over weekends.
On the plus side, they do have a small delivery truck so they can most likely get the wood to you if you are unable to collect. Obviously there is a fee involved and I would imagine they have a maximum radius from their office to which they are able to do deliveries.
My overall impressions in dealing with this company is excellent. 5 stars for sure. If you need some wood, please give them a call.
Cheers,
Ian.
