Howzit gents... figured it was time to quit lurking, and get involved on the forum - quite a few of you will know me as BillyBob on Carbonite / Carforums.co.za and a few other local forums..
I figured the time had come for me to put together a decent HT setup - didn't bother much in my old place, as the system was plenty loud enough to annoy the neighbours, and didn't even have the space to stage properly in my living room on account of the front speaker spacing..
New place has a nice spacious living room, with some pretty decent accoustics, and will be used for movies for the most part, so wanted to do it some justice.
Current system consists of the following:
Sony STR-DG800 7.1 receiver (budget unit, I know), but it works well with 100-110w x 7.
Kenwood LSK-737 fronts - nice big 180w 8 ohm 4-ways with 10" woofers, mids and highs. These things thump - while a bit boomy for my liking, they do the trick for now... Perhaps a bit underpowered by the receiver?
Mordaunt Short MS10 Music Series bookshelf speakers for surround - 8 ohm, unsure of power rating, but their sound is nice and clear up to high volumes, so can't really fault them.
Pro-Linear 10" active sub (Now sold)
PSB Alpha C1 centre speaker
The system is playing well and very dynamically, as the Kenwoods can crank a lot of bass (though I know I'll need to put an active sub in at some point) - The PSB centre channel is driving me nuts though - it's a beefy and heavy item, consisting of twin 5.25" midrange drivers, with a small tweeter - but the sound is flat and uninspired - almost like it's muffled... I've tried changing the phase on the speaker, and it sounded even worse.. I now want to take it back and get it checked out, as I suspect the tweeter to be dead, or perhaps on the off chance that the amp isn't up to the task, but I wanted to gauge some opinions here first..
I've read some very good reviews on PSB overseas, but how's their quality / reputation perceived locally? Did I maybe get a dud?
I've now taken the plunge and picked up a Sony STR-KM5000 6.2 system off another forum, and I'm seriously considering just popping that in altogether and giving it a whirl until such a time as I can look at upgrading to some nice Onkyo / Yamaha stuff.
Or should I mix and match some of the items, and run it off the new receiver? KM5000 receiver, Kenwoods in the front, Mordaunts in the rear, Sony centre speaker and Sony subs?
Advice, please!
Philip
