JNouw was over today and he reckoned that I should peck around in some old Grundig speakers I had recently gotten from a console radio that was donated to me. The grundig stereo console seems like I might best salvage the power transformers, OPTs and EL84s for a little SET unless someone really wants to have a go at a Grundig stereo valve receiver.

These little oval jobbies don't sound at all bad! They're 95dB sensitive to boot but with a Qts around 0.9 they're best suited for use in open baffles or sealed boxes, though I'll model and see whether they are of any use in something like a ML-TQWT.

The larger unit is 8" x 12" and it's accompanied by a 6" x 4" mid-tweeter with an amazingly high fs around 450Hz with most of the suspension from the paper roll surround and the spider only serving to center the small 3/4" voice coil.

The odd thing about the oval speakers is that they beam more tightly in the longer direction of the cone than in the narrower dimension. This is easily spotted by them just playing in my hand. I'll hook up a simple test baffle and listen to them with a bit of crossover setup.
