We are spending a few days at the son in laws house. They have Dstv playing through a Samsung TV UA50F6400AKXXA. The picture is, for want of a better phrase, horrible. It is crystal clear and I assume 4k resolution, but what bugs me is the lack of realism. The main characters are so clear that they almost pop out of the picture and the whole effect to me is unnatural. Ever since I first saw HD TV I've had the same thoughts, but assumed it had improved over the years.
To use a musical analogy, it's almost like the bad old days of digital music where everything was clear, but cold and sterile and unsatisfying.

The demo clips they show in the TV shops all look stunning, is that limited depth of field or better source material or some other trick?

By the way, I really don't miss Dstv, still a couple of hundred channels of drek. If anything it's worse now than it was years ago when we canceled, 80% reality shows
