I just got a new HD PVR and while I was busy going through the installation options, something occured to me.
At the moment I have my set calibrated for each type of input, incoming SD signals are decoded in line with Rec 601 and all HD signals according to Rec 709.
Now the problem with the cable box is that you have to set it to a fixed output resolution, 1080i in my case. Now as with SA's HD, the majority of the channels are in SD. However the TV is now recieving an HD signal carrying SD content which means that both the luma and chroma will be incorrect.
I doubt the cable box is doing any colour and luminance correction. Or Would it?
So now I've calibrated the cable input to Rec 601 because the vast majority of shows my wife and I watch are SD. It just seems like quite a big flaw, can't quite get my head around it (actually, this might be just the excuse I need to buy an Eye-One :, I could then check the late night test patterns).
