Hey everyone,
It's been a while since I've posted on technical topics but here goes.
I understand the basics of headphone impedance, that is that higher ohms requires more power to drive it but I'm battling to find any benefits to using say 300 ohm rated headphones besides compatibility with older amplifiers as apposed to an 18 ohm that would be compatible with mobile devices up. Is there a chance of blowing your cans when used with higher output devices if they have low impedance?
I'm asking because I ordered the Sennheiser Momentum Over-Ear which have an 18 ohm rating. Is it dangerous to use this with CDJ's for example? As most Pioneer decks can drive 70 ohm headphones (HD25) perfectly.
If not what are the benefits to using Sennheiser HD650's and what is stopping high impedance headphones from becoming a niche category a la Vinyl? Do you simply match headphones to the equipment you'll be using?
Momentums seem fine for me as my audio interface drives from 18-32 ohms but should I have opted for higher impedance cans with a headphone amp? They will be used mobile a lot but also to produce when I don't want to wake up anyone (I also have KRK Rokits as my main reference).
