A friend of mine just bought a set of Polk TSi400, TSi100 and CS10 centre (from me) and connected it to his Yamaha RXV-573 receiver (basically brand new). At first it sounded great but after about 40 minutes of playing the receiver started clipping and distorting. When we stopped the Blu Ray each speaker had a humming noise coming from it. This stopped when we switched the receiver off and on again but eventually after some more playing the humming started again. When I felt the receiver is was running abnormally hot. I think the receiver might have been damaged or is simply not strong enough for the Polks (Also consider that he has Bi-Amp'd the 400's).
Damage might have been caused as a result of the following:
1. The receiver is positioned in an enclosed plasma stand with very limited ventilation.
2. A Blu Ray player was placed directly on top of the receiver (which might have added to the overheating problem).
3. Prior to the Polks he had two bookshelf speakers connected to the receiver (also Bi-Amped). The problem however is that the inter links between the speaker terminals were never removed .
Could any of the above factors have damaged the receiver?
Thanks
