Here's a potentially interesting challenge.
My sister runs the archiving department at Wits, and they've recently been given a collection of Khoi, San and other indigenous music and language recordings made by Prof Taill over a period, that they want to digitise.
Many of them are shellac, many are flimsy, many of them are falling apart around the steel disc in their centre.
These are irreplaceable recordings.
Anyone know how to handle them, investigate them, etc without damaging them?
If so, please reply here and I'll drop you a pm - she'll be grateful for any expert advice!
There are also a bunch of tapes, 8 inch and 5 inch floppies old micro-optical discs etc that she needs help with. Anyone have a reader with working software for these things that you're willing to lend or donate to a good cause?
