Help with understanding the use of a Sub

Hi Guys,

Need help to understand the difference in amplification between a powered home sub and a dedicated amplifier. I do understand there would a difference in quality between high and low-end components. I see some subs with speaker output posts and wondered would there a difference in using these in a stereo setup as opposed to a dedicated amp i.e preamp to sub to speakers..

Any thoughts will be appreciated..txs
