How do I get my audio senses trained to audition equipment?

You guys talk of treble, bass, tonal balance etc.

Is there anything to suggest to make my equipment audition/demo's more subjective and allow me to make a inform decision.

Making my visual decisions has been very easy, if it looks good and is priced right, buy it.
