Bad service is becoming so common in South Africa, its gotten to the stage where I hate buying anything new, or paying anyone for a service, because 8/10 times it'll be crap - and it'll be a huge fight to get it rectified. So much so that I've become a builder, painter, plumber, plasterer, electrician, etc, etc just to avoid someone stuffing up something in my house.
Using a attorney is mostly out of the question unless the sum is large (say R100,000+).
My latest issue is with a bad stacking glass door (R12,500) - the supplier (and installer) seem to think its not their responsibility if its a manufacturing defect, I've just let them know that if the manufacturer cannot rectify it properly, my claim is with them, not with the manufacturer.
Your chance of claim to the CPA will take forever, if it happens, and the legal route will end up costing more than the item.
Most companies don't care about bad publicity because there is always another fool willing to spend his money these days.
At least once a year I (re)consider sucking up another few years of studying - just to study law and at least have some sort of recourse on money spent.

Thats just the one issue this week - my other was with purchasing a vehicle for my SO - after insisting it be properly tested by testing center (of their choice), the dealer sent it for the wrong test, I requested comprehensive technical, they sent it for a multipoint, even after I stated I would not accept a multipoint, I then had them send it again, to a testing center of my choice.
Their testing center (AVTS):
No repairs or body work reported.
Tyre tread 5-7mm
My testing center (Dekra):
Entire back of the vehicle had body work done.
Tyre tread about half of AVTS.
Needless to say, the dealer kept insisting the vehicle was accident free - but ignored my repeated request to explain why their testing center did not pick up even minor repairs to at least one panel.
