How good must a DAC for a sub be?

Hi All, 

I am trying to implement DRC in the digital domain and thought perhaps to have a separate DAC going into the sub. I use a Modi 3 for my mains. What's the minimum I could get away with for the sub bearing in mind its limited application and as some experts said many years ago: "cd is way better that vinyl for bass"

Thinking of going for a real cheapie.
