How much do speaker covers degrade the sound?

Been listening all afternoon on three different sets of speakers, cover on, cover off, sick of the same song now, but its seems the covers really mess up the mid/high frequencies, especially if there is any kind of lattice behind the cloth.

Just curious if anybody else has noticed the difference as much as I did today?
