How much of music loss with MP3 and M4A

Hi All,

There are some CD's from my favorite jazz artists that are only available on iTunes, I have searched high and low to find the CD's. Unfortunately iTunes doesn't sell the files on loss less format, I decided to buy one album which sounded pretty okay to me, question is how much does one lose with compressed format music.
