I've just finished replacing a cap on the kid's monitor....but what a mission. I have 15w, 45w, 60w & 100w irons. In this case I used the 60w. I was not able to desolder the old cap from the board. The solder just would not get soft enough to be sucked off. I ended up cutting the leads where they exit the cap.

I then bent and lined up the remaining leads and heated them up and put some solder on the ends. Then I put solder on the cap leads....they were VERY short, about 10mm. Then I rested the cap lead over lead on the board and held the iron underneath until both lots flowed. Then did the same on the other lead. It doesn't look pretty though :) but it's clean and firm.

How does one flow solder on today's boards, they must have changed something because as a kid I remember using my dad's iron and we never had any issues like this.
