Just rushed home from Steve's with my new copy of Magician's Hat. Connected up the turntable, cleaned the disc nicely, needle to surface..................

Only one channel.

I use an old technics amplifier. Checked the aux in using my kids iPod. 2 channels.

Now is it the turntable or the amplifiers' phono preamp?

Connected my multimeter, one probe to the external ring on the RCA, one to the spike. nada. Try the other channel. Similar wads of nothng.

So I think. Is 100mV sensitive enough? Should the multimeter be connected across the centrl spike and an earth somewhere?

How do these things work anyway?

Can someone please tell me how to test the output of a turntable?

Thank you, knowledgeable sirs.
