I need 1 x4uF 600~1000VDC cap and 2 x 8uF 600~1000uF caps
to replace leaky, out-of-spec paper in oil caps in an old valve amp.
(Power supply filter and smoothing caps.)
Preferably I would like to cut open and re-stuff the big black square capacitor can,
and re-fit. So size /may/ matter .
So, I have 4 questions at this stage:
1. Where do I buy these locally? Or who can sell some to me? ray:
2. I have brand-new motor run caps - 4uF 450VAC and 8uF 450VDC - can I use these?
3. Is 450AC in these caps = 630VDC?
4. If these caps (the currently fitted, original ones) are dodgy, can / will they take out my rectifier valve?
Re 4: last night I fitted a brand-NOS Brimar 5U4G valve, and after playing beautifully for about 60 minutes, the
amp "died" - blew the 2A mains fuse. And now the NOS Brimar 5U4G is dead.
All advice and pointers appreciated.
