I sent my passport renewal off in Nov, after paying R 2550 for the fee.  In Feb they declined the application on the grounds that the residency evidence (proof of address) I sent did not show my street address on the front page (it was the SABC TV licence renewal letter which has an address on one side and the statement on the other)

I emailed them back saying that they had looked on the wrong side.  Today, 4 weeks later I told that "Due to security and vetting purposes, they can only examine one side of a sheet of paper, but I am welcome to resubmit the aforesaid document clearly stating that the front page will be the one that affords the necessary residency evidence"

Maybe the pen-pusher in the UK office was trained here in SA.  So I must now send the same document back, labelled FRONT and REAR

I subsequently discovered that my Permanent Residence Permit has to be renewed in SA via VFS Visa On-line.  Home Affairs have out-sourced.  There is a R1400 fee and it takes 8 months!!!  The mind boggles
