It is time for my Mark Levinson to be upgraded to the latest internals (transport mechanism and a new decoding board) and and the parts have been ordered from the states. Now what to do when it goes to the HFX spa for a update...
I have sourced a nice black Cambridge Audio 840C which upscales the 16bit/44.1HHz to 24bit/384kHz on the analog out. Using single ended RCA connectors to a ML380S it brought out detail as expected but (compared to the ML31.5 totally lacking in the bass area) really not involved as I was expecting.
Bypassing the internal DACs and outing into a ML35 DAC (only handles up to 48kHz) the fullness and image were back. I will try the balanced out (analog) still but finding the 840C worth the money....however; there is just something different with reference kit and await the ML to return, the older DAC and CD transport is still one of the better units available.
