Is an HDMI AV receiver required?

Hi Guys,

I have an HDTV with HDpvr and DVD player. I would like too improve the sound quality of movies and mainly listen too stereo music and a bit of radio.

What are my options:

a. HDMI AV receiver + pair of speakers
b. integrated amp + seperate tuner + pair of speakers


is HDMI a factor in calculating my ideal solution?
