I didn't really have a choice. I actually wanted a write-off and pay-out, because for safety reasons I had already resolved that I didn't want the same car anymore. But insurance's decision was to repair. And the repairers did do a good job, so I can't really fault them for the decision. I don't know what the premium impact would've been if they replaced. The replace would've been 2.5x the cost of the repair. Also, the tracking device was a minimum requirement when I took out the policy, so it wasn't really an option to go without either. In darker moments I have asked myself whether I should have been so quick to call Beame when I saw the car was gone (it happened in a window of 45 mins), but that would be acting in bad faith... And the same security camera that filmed the theft would've filmed me hanging around outside. I don't know. Because of the recovery (let's not mention the hack of removing the car from stolen registry or having to obtain new licence disks) I have wondered whether having the tracker is worth it. But if you can't get insured, or God forbid, something happens while your family or you are in the car, it's probably better to have something.
