I did an interesting exercise the other day. A client came over with a problem cartridge that he was convinced was pooped and distorting... Anyway we tested here and there and I did my best to look with the loupe and the microscope and in the end we could not reproduce the heard distortion using my LP's (even some of my not-so-good-not-really-for-demo-purposes LP's)...
To cut a long story short my TD2001 came out to demo a cartridge (my go-to DL110). The guy commented that the table missed some PRAT compared to what we had listened to before... To me the TD2001 has always been a little dry sounding and can actually quite ruthless with bad recordings. Give it a good recording and detail and noice floor is excellent. What the table definitely does not have is that 'foot-tapping' LP12 sound. PRAT.
To me the TD2001 sounds 'true'... Does that mean that PRAT is a colouration (be it a pleasant one - a bit like 'valve distortion' is pleasent  :pleasant: )?
