A couple of years ago, I saw this rather sad looking JBL Onbeat rumble on the "no warranty" table at a cash convertors.
"it's not working because the plug where the power supply plugs in is broken" they said.
It also never included a power supply.
Anyway, got the price to R600 for this "non working" Dock.
I then asked them for a screwdriver. A "Tech" had had a go at this as was evident from the broken clips and the one driver had been plugged into the subwoofer and the subwoofer output into the one driver (swapped).
Asked them for a laptop power supply, plugged the laptop psu in, my girlfriends iPhone into the lighting port and wiggled the broken connector around and there was lights on and sound.
Chucked this thing, in pieces into a plastic bag and gave them their R600 and departed.
Polished out as many scratches as I could with rubbing compound (including the nice matt finish unfortunately). Used rubber foam to seal the join where clips had broken to stop leakage (2 parts join on the foam rubber, the foam rubber is not on top of them).
I find myself using this most of the time these days, either laptop via Bluetooth or my phone via Bluetooth.
No, I'm not going to say that it sounds just as good as my system, but it's convieniant and I don't feel bad for it when I push the volume up and abuse it like I would my system. Its loud, in some cases it sounds decent, in some cases it sounds lacking.
It's not horrible to listen to at all (certainly better than a Sony mgongo or many other midi hifi type things).
I think I keep the low cost of it in my mind aswell as the convieniance considering I don't have the time to just sit down and listen.
In the last 10 years I've barely had the time to just listen, just like I never have the time to watch TV/movies.
This is one of those items that falls under the "best money I've spent" list of items I think especially because it's the most used item I currently own taking 3rd place to my phone and laptop respectively.
I miss some of my old gear(MA GS20 especially) but I was never finding the time to use it so I have this dock now and a scaled down system for just incase but that also basically never gets used, I do look at it sometimes though and think that the old school Monitor Audio Silver 4i I have now look damn nice on the stands I have aslong as I keep the grills on though, grills off they are ugly things to look at.
Anyway, I do sometimes think about how this Dock would sound if I rebuilt it out of wood and added tweeters to pick up from the 18khz they leave off at, I then realise that I can try improve on this all I want but it would be a waste because I'm using something called Bluetooth.
Pic is from the Web, mine still needs to be cleaned up a little more.
