Here's my submission for the agony aunt column >
I started off as a typical IT techie and worked my way up the ladder. After a few (ok.. a lot of ) years I find myself removed from the techie stuff and in a managerial role working on the systems that we as a business use and the integration thereof. Also a lot of time is spent working with the data they provide to give the business insights and strategic direction on what to do etc.
I dabble with SQL (seeing as we don't have a DBA) and enjoy it quite a bit. Would it be worthwhile to change direction and go into the DBA route? Perhaps a MCSE: Data Platform certification which leads to data scientist stuff down the line? Or should I rather stick to the managerial role to see if I can crack a nod into an IT manager / smalltime CIO type role?
All this bearing in mind that I'm a 40YO toppie so a bit of midlife crisis oint:
