R.I.P. 5 June 2018
I bought a 2nd hand set for R8.5k and intended using them as desktop monitors , but they are much more capable than that.
The LS50's are on rubbish stands (vivo audio - utter crap) and I have positioned them around 2m apart and about 2.5m from me. All walls etc are at least 2m from the Kefs , so they essentially in free space.
Using a Squeezebox transporter as transport , pre and DAC and a Rotel class D 250w/chan amp to drive em ,
My reference is a set of meridian DSP6000 speakers and 2 SVS subs , which I had running on another system
The sources were synched up - IE Kef system and meridian system running in tandem so I could A/B them
My preferences are loudish levels with tight earth shaking bass .
Quality of construction is superb ,but I don't like the copper coloured driver and there should be some grilles to protect the driver when not in use.
The sound you get belies their size , imaging is amazing cos of the concentric driver and soundstage is large , extending both sides of the speakers rather than a small concentrated dead centre sound.
The treble and midrange is absolutely sublime , it rivals just about anything out there and is truly without fault.
Dynamics , microdynamics , tonal colouring and detail are there in spades and the sound is very lifelike , no artificial bumps and humps to emphasise anything.
So that is the good , now for the "bad" , the lil suckers wont play at very loud levels without "hardening up" and they do not do low bass. The bass that is there is articulate and very fast. The problem is that due to the lack of low bass , some of the body of some performances is lost.
This is NOT to say that the lack of low bass puts one off the speakers , they are astounding in the amount of bass that the small drivers DO produce.
I actually tried one of my SVS subs to fill in that very low bass , but I actually preferred the speakers all by themselves. Most likely a result of not really spending any time integrating the sub and not allowing for a high pass to the LS50's.
I think once I can high pass the LS50's , I can get some more wellie out of them as they will be relieved of any bass duties under 80hz or so.
The speakers themselves have been run for less than 100 hours , and according to reports , they need more than double that to truly reveal all their "goodness".
I am really impressed with these speakers and they could easily be the foundation of a VERY high class system.
Even at the new price of round R15k , I feel they are worthy and can take on anything out there. Enjoying every moment with these , and I am a fussy customer.
Some pics will follow later today.
