I have a unit thats currently occupied by a tenant that I got through an estate agent who is getting monthly commission. The rental agreement is expiring in a month and I wrote to the agent that I wont be renewing as I will handle all the affairs myself. The current tenant is interested in signing a contract with me but the agent says that he will be entitled to commission for as long as that tenant is still there because he place that tenant himself.
I have been through every line in the contract and it says nothing about that. I made him aware of that and he says its the law according to the Estate Agency affairs Board though its not in our contract. I think he is coming up with this as an intimidation so that he can be entitled to commission should I fall for it. According to me Im only bound by terms and conditions that are in the contract that I signed and nothing else.
Is there such a thing that the tenant cannot sign with me if he wants to continue staying there when the estate agent's contract comes to an end?
