My EOS 450D came with the std. kit lenses, the EF-S 18-55mm and the EF-S 55-250mm.

I am looking for something a bit faster for improved low-light performance. Would you consider the Sigma 17-70mm f2.8-4 a worthwhile option, or is it only a "sideways" upgrade from the EF-S18-55mm?

Any experience with fixed lenses like the Canon EF 35mm f2.0? (On cameras with non-full frame sensors)

Any other suggestions?
