In my current setup I have everything connecting to my TV and then my TV connected to my AVR via optical. I use the USB on the TV for playing media. I tested some old movies I had and after changing the settings for the optical port on the TV to auto the amp picked up a surround sound signal.
I downloaded some of the Dolby digital demos to test the surround sound but it would appear that my TV does not support the audio format. I tried playing them off my laptop connected to the TV via HDMI and the AVR would only pick up two channel sound.
Does the optical out on the TV just pass through the audio it is receiving from the HDMI source or does it need to support the type/encoding of the audio to be able to pass it on?
