Restore, strip for bits or rebuild.
So sometimes one is faced decisions more emotional than sensible.
Some months ago I traded in a Linn Basik turntable with Akito arm. The Akito had faulty bearings. This was repaired at great cost by Audio Origami in the UK. The value of this arm (even if no cent was spent on it) is above the typical value of a Linn Basik turntable. It will be sold on its own. The lid has also been used on a more premium deck already.
So we now have a neat condition Linn Basik without arm or lid.
Do I break it down further (though the parts are not really compatible with a modern LP12 for eg)
The only thing of true value or novelty is the motor and its pulley. Again a simpler version of what is used today on lp12 but better than an early 80s 220 volt motor and it has a 45 rpm step.
I also have a project tone arm which will fit just perfect but it needs an external rewire.
I can have a lid made.
Pop quiz, do I invest the time and effort to build this in to a nice working turntable that perhaps fetches R3500.
even though the cost of a made lid, value of arm and rewire plus some cartridge will easily amount to R2500.
Seems a lot of work to recoup R1000 from the linn.
Do I just sell it as is to a tinkerer or break it in to bits?
Or do I build it in to something nice and hope someone buys it and gives It a new lease of life and brings joy?
