Sometimes, but not always, you can copy the email address or cellphone number on the advert or reply and search it on Facebook and you will probably find the person on Facebook and see what type of person the seller or buyer is before the deal. If the person happen to have his privacy setting set on public you can check what the person studied and where the person worked and what positions he/she had before, and then you can make sums whether the person selling or buying the item can actually afford such an item. In theory you could identify what items are stolen or not but do not make assumptions for which you do not have proof for, rather avoid a dodgy deal than getting sued for false claims over worthless goods. Remember, we are in very bad economical times and it won't get better anytime soon. People WILL find all kinds of soetsappige blink stories to get out of their financial problems.
You can also search the number or email address on Google by typing the email or cell number in quotation marks and setting your search results to South Africa, sometimes you might even find out whether they have other types of accounts floating on the web. Also keep in mind that every person you search has right to his or her privacy, it should not be used to stalk people or spam their accounts with complaints after a deal went sour.
Gumtree scammers will probably catch on soon and will be changing their numbers and email addresses on Facebook, always remember Gumtree's rules.
How do I stay safe while using Gumtree?
What are the scams I should watch out for?
What do I do if I have been scammed?
