Does anyone else on the forum run a PD284? I've been running mine now for quite a while with an old Shure V15-III and a replacement stylus from Thakker. While it sounded very musical, to me, it lacked certain things like detail and transparency. To cut a long story short, with the lockdown and lots of spare time, I decided to do some mods.
I started off by rewiring the tonearm from the cartridge to a terminal and used an old length of Audioquest Ruby cable from the terminal to the headamp. Also took a chance in mounting my old Kiseki Purple Heart Sapphire that I had tucked away for yonks, keeping in mind that a low output MC cartridge should'nt be compatible with the PD284's standard arm. WOW what a pleasant surprise! The miracle that I wished for with fingers crossed actually happened. The transparency, detail, soundstage and delicate overtones have emerged. I have not heard this cartridge sound this good in years. Am I happy? Like a pig in the proverbial!!! Sometimes experimenting can yield extraordinary results.... leasant:
