Whats up guys.
I recently got hold of Marantz 5220 Tape deck from Mr Carpenter.
When I first got it the only working function was "Play" none of the other functions worked as well most of the lights were out.
The motor also seemed stiff and after turning the shaft it started it come loose.
I then took the belts off and noticed that the motor was not spinning correctly I then stripped that motor put some Q20 on the shaft and the reassembled it, after that it seemed like it was working correctly.
My first mission was to replace the belts. Got some new ones at Jico Electronics at 2 rand each.
Also after alot of lubrication I got the other functions working again (Record,Fast-forward and Rewind).
After putting the Tape Mechanism back into the actually unit I noticed that the everything was playing in the wrong direction when playing the take up reel was turning clockwise and not anti clockwise.
This puzzled me as I did not change any components or put in connections the wrong way round.
After talking to a repair guy he told me that I put the motor together incorrectly and changed the polarisation. I never knew that was possible but after taking apart the motor and repositioning the can the shaft turned in the right direction !
These are the lamps I used to replace the fuse lights that came out of the unit.
The Tape Mechanism
While taking the Tape Mechanism out I noticed someone did a bad job at resoldering wires back to the head.
Also replaced these 4 caps
Also the sliding pots were very sticky I stripped them, cleaned them as well as lubricate them.
What it looks like after everything was put back together
Regards
Byron
