"Missing" sound

I need some advice. I currently have a Yamaha 1040 driving Wharfedale diamond 10.7 speakers and a Jamo 650 sub. It feels as if there is something "missing" in the sound when watching movies and listening to music. There is also lack of bass. I dont know how to explain the "missing" sound but will a power amp make a big difference, is it the AVR, the speakers or the sub?
