Hi,
As mentioned in my posting on the Linkwitz Orion+ speakers, I also have a pair of Linkwitz Pluto+ speakers. Together with a friend of mine we built two pairs over the December of 2006. You can find more details on the Linkwitz Lab website: www.linkwitzlab.com.
An introduction and overview of the Pluto speakers: http://www.linkwitzlab.com/Pluto/intro.htm
The specifications: http://www.linkwitzlab.com/Pluto/specs.htm
The Pluto+ subwoofer: http://www.linkwitzlab.com/Pluto/subwoofer.htm
I've attached some pictures of them. In one of the pictures you can see the cabinets for the subwoofers as a work in progress. I ended up doing everything in either matt or satin black so that they'll visually disappear in a darkened home theater.
Since the Plutos are active speakers all you need is a source and a pre-amp. I used a Slimdevices Squeezebox and and my Denon AVR 3805. For the subwoofer I used two of the amplifier channels of the Denon 3805 being fed from the output of the Pluto+ active crossover/EQ.
How do they sound? In my opinion, excellent - you'll have to move into the vicinity of R30K+ speakers to get similar sound quality. They do sound different from box speakers, but once you've heard them you'll realise how limited the boxed speaker sound can be. The Pluto's sweet spot is extremely large and the imaging is pinpoint sharp from almost any listening position - not diffuse as some people would think omni's sound. I also used them as my front L/R speakers in my home theater. Due to the excellent imaging and wide sweet spot I had no need for a center speaker - friends used to suspect that I have a center speaker hidden somewhere. It is actually the best "center speaker" sound I've heard in a long time, without even having one!
I've alluded to some of the effort and costs involved in building your own in the Orion+ thread here: http://www.avforums.co.za/index.php/topic,1231.0.html
Since I've upgraded to the Orion+ speakers these are now for sale - I would love to keep both, but I need to fund this expensive hobby! :-(
Regards
Jaco
