So last year before heading off to get hitched I came across this amplifier on gumtree in KZN, Talib was always going on about how lovely these old Sony amplifiers were. So I managed to get it over here despite its hefty 18kg weight and the owner being a grump for a decent price.
Anyways, it didn't get any use until I came back in January. Everything was good for a while - no scratching etc. and it sounded really good with my yellow cones. The only thing I didn't like was the speaker terminals - they were absolutely rubbish.
Last week it started making wierd noises through the right speaker and went into protection mode, but came back after i switched it off and back on. The next day it was completely dead and back into permanent protection mode. Managed to get hold of Nilam and arranged with him to check it out. Took him a day or 2 before getting back to me, one of the resistors popped in the power stage or something. Otherwise he said everything was perfectly sound.
I decided to plan a DIY mod while it was getting repaired, namely replacing the terminals to something that would accept bananas. The below photos illustrate what I did
Removing Backplate
Desoldering old terminals
Checking how it all fits
Putting it back together
Soldered the new internals
Done. And it even works
Thanks for looking chaps.
