This is an unusual thread in that it uses a commercial subwoofer, strips it from its cabinet and ends up with something quite bizarre.
I was asked to assist with a sub build which started off with TSP measurements of a driver. Ari first contacted Anton (NoSnipe) who referred the build to me. I re-measured the driver parameters three times because I
have never encountered a subwoofer driver with VAS > 800l! Other specs are an Fs of just about 20Hz, a >7Ohm DC impedance (begging for a dual driver build) and an 800W AES power limit (and a minor detail of over 20mm Xmax one way and 96 dB efficiency). I quite like the extraordinary and decided to build the biggest vented cab I have encountered yet. This is what I guess cinema subs would be like and to have one in a domestic environment is a little crazy, but fun.
The subwoofer manufacturer (somewhat oddly) has asked that the brand not be displayed in a DIY build and I?ll respect that here. Never the less it?s not every day one encounters a >800l subwoofer enclosure for a single woofer so I?ll post some amusing pictures later.
In short the enclosure is braced every 200mm (or less), tuned to around 20Hz with a slot port measuring 60mm x 1800mm with a 50mm RADIUS roundover on both ends of the port resulting in a matt black beast to be placed underneath Ari?s projector screen. That's >1000 cm^2 port area and just shy of 2000 cm^2 if you count the round-over so port chuffing shouldn't be an issue ever.
In short it?s a beast that shakes your rafters. 20Hz test tones do some funky stuff to windows, doors and cupboards.
