I went the path of seperates some time ago. Orderding my VA power amp (5.2Ch) and purchasing a second hand Nad T163 av processor. Using a Vincent sv122 avr on loan (while waiting for the VA - good things are worth waiting for). Sold the NAD163 recently, as it does not have hdmi connections.
Realized with a schock that the new hdmi capable processor are too pricy for me. Read the reply from Hiphibian on another thread.
I would buy a (very) decent stereo pre amp with AV pass through. Then buy a decent Jap AV monster at the uper middle range or better (most by now have pre outs). High end AV processors are seldom up to date, can be buggy and loose value faster then you can say DTS Neo 10.4... In two or 3 years time, keep the stereo pre and change the Jap monster to keep up to date with the centre ceiling speaker output which must eminent in the race for the next sonic dimension that is surround...
I recently purchased a EAR834L line amplifier for stereo duty >: ???( only notice the same on the classifieds with upgraded valves for half the price I paid).
My request is for help on deciding between the Nad 747 and the Onkyo TX-NR709. I love the sound character of the Nad units. Realistsic authentic type sound. I am not concerned about all the bells and whistels or 3D. I am just concerned that I might be in a rut about Nad and not open for a better alternative. If
