For many years there have been job ads that don't declare the remuneration offered. I find this irritating, because then you don't know the level of employee they are hoping to recruit. Some, on the other hand, offer peanuts for a job description that suits a top expert. I have noticed that recently, though, job seekers are required to state their current (or most recent) income. The latest is to ask for a pay slip. I suspect it is a way to get leverage against job seekers to limit what they can demand.

I think it is unfair to ask the applicant to reveal their hand, while it is considered poor etiquette to ask about salary too early in the process.
Can one decline such requests?
