Newb...looking to get a reciever

This is my 1st post. i've been reading many of the informative posts you guys know your stuff.

I have 2 questions.

What are your thought on buying 2nd hand receivers i.e i can get a Harmon Kardon 247 about a year old for R5k.

And what would be the best type of receiver i could get for R6000.
