So, whaddya think of the incredible diversity of our wors? What is a water buffalo? I've never seen one unless the strange creature with the mournful, doe-like eyes trotting along Main Road Kenilworth the other day was a water buffalo.

When I wuz a kid growing up in Durbanville, the place was semi-rural with farms all around and close to the town.

My late old man was the accountant for a group of butcheries and part of his salary package was virtually an unlimited quantity of the very best choice meat money could buy in the '50's. These butcheries had their own 'slagpale' on Durbanville's outskirts.

In fact, on leaving his butchery employers to become a public servant, they presented my father with a magnificent desk made from kiaat which came from Durbanville's abbattoir.

This growing up experience (maybe regrettably) blessed me with a most acute sense of 'nose' for suspicious ingredients in meat, much to my dear wife's exasperation as to what wors or burgers to buy.

She is the most careful of shoppers but it has happened that she gets 'deceived' or misled by the advertising blurb on processed meat packaging, as we probably all are.

I'm not going to name two 'high profile' wors brands sold by two different  nationwide supermarkets but the brandnames for these worses were imo chosen with deliberate intent to entice shoppers to buy the stuff firmly convinced the product contains nothing but 'wholesome goodness' and derived from free range, hand reared koeitjies and kalfies.

Recently, I was in a neigbouring suburb on a Saturday morning and remembering I needed some lacquer thinners, went to one of the named supermarkets where they were having a 'promotional braai' punting their wors.

The nauseating stink emanating from the place made me turn back and buy my thinners elsewhere.  The wors being braaied was a product bought once only by my wife when all the doors and windows had to be opened to get rid of the pong...

South African consumers are much too gullible and too easily deceived by what is printed on the packaging.
