Heh, what can I say!
You see, it happened like this: You guys know how I've been wondering about the whole Dolby Digital decoder story where I just wanted to buy the decoder itself. Well, I came across one in the classifieds (it was actually Pierre's) and I figured, GREAT. Before I got it (he had to get it from the Hi-Fi shop where it was standing) I came across a Marantz DV6600 SACD player that had discrete 5.1 analogue output. A mate had it on offer for a pretty good price. At this time Pierre let me know that the Hi-Fi Shop actually sold the stuff I was interested in. I figured, what the hell, I'll buy it. I listened to it a bit but wasn't grabbed by the whole SACD fad. I did some checking and this player used 3 stereo PCM1782 DAC's, these go for a dollar each with average specs :gah: That kinda ruined the player for me, albeit more mental than anything else. :banghead:
Back to the main story. So I decided to check out some other Marantz SACD players and came across the bigger brother, the DV7600. I really liked the specs on this one. It uses the Crystal CS4398, I heard these for the first time in a Classe CDP300 and liked it VERY much. Just for giggles I decided to pop in to my local hi-fi store and audition it. Heh, I wish I didn't :banghead: :banghead: So anyway, I was so impressed with the thing that I ended up spending R6800 on it. AAAaaaaggghhh!
So now I've got it and spending the last 2 hours with it all I can say is that there might be something to the whole SACD story! I had a Diana Krall SACD and this is the first I decided to try. From the first second this player distinguished itself from anything else I ever owned. The sound was open, airy, smooth, etc. (I try and avoid audio lingo but can't help myself). The sound reminded me a lot of that Classe, obviously not as good but very similar. It eases the pain on my wallet a little at least. Sigh...
So there is my audio budget blown again and I still have my enclosures to complete.
Anyway, thanks Pierre (jokes!!!) :044: :044:
