Hi,
Just wondered if it's true that if the AV reciever itself doesn't need to power the fronts, there is reserve power for the other 3?
I've got a budget Marantz SR5600 driving 3 x front 4 ohm Elac speakers and a pair of 8 ohm ARs at the rear. The Elac site says even 8 ohm amplifiers can run there 4 ohm speakers (minimum drop is about 3.5 ohm) but I'm still considering a power amplifier for the fronts (either NAD c272 or Rotel 1070). Is it true the other speakers would perform better as the mains are 'gone'?
I understand the logic - but in theory? How much better? Since there is no settings 'no mains' - would it just know not to provide power because they're not there and/or the preout is in use?
