This afternoon my laptop and modem got fried by a power surge during a small thunderstorm. If that is technically what happened, I don't know. For once I did not have my hifi on, reading the paper. Instead I was playing with my 3yr old on her bed with the older one watching a movie on the laptop in the next room. Anyway, I should probably have unplugged the power etc and let it run on battery power, but I didn't.
Next thing theres a snapping noise and the movie goes off. Right now there's only lights coming on but no boot-up sequence. Same with the adsl router. Obviously not a straight ligthning strike otherwise I don't expect there would have been lights.
This got me thinking, would that R50 Ellies surge protector plug have saved the stuff? I've got one of them on the hifi. Lets say that was a surge, what about the severe power dips we had earlier im the day? They had my poor avr switch on and off about 3 times in a row.
How do I best safe guard my equipment and appliances? Does anyone have ideas? Appart from insurance...which I'm starting to think is the way to go. I've got insurance against lightning, but not for power surges....
