OK, I know the heading seems like moaning, but it is not actually  I just figured I would liven things up here a bit...

As a preamble to my little epiphany, let me describe my current system as it is now:
Marantz CD5001 (This is going to be extensively modified later)
Marantz DV7600 (MAN, I love this thing!)
Custom Pre-Amp (PGA2310 based, pretty cool)
Custom Amp (GB150 SKA, Whew _VERY_ impressive)
Jamo7.6 speakers (Somewhat surprised by my little secondhand acquisition)

My amp/pre-amp have been running now for almost 2 months now and has seen extensive use, hence the enclosures not being finished yet.

Please bear in mind that I consider myself as someone with a terribly objective view on matters pertaining to audio. The moment somebody tries to assert their subjective opinions on me I turn around and leave (refer to previous posts on this topic!) It is because of this that I sit in a very confused position. Ever since I had this amp/pre-amp combo, the sound has improved beyound belief. From what started off as OK, albeit quite harsh sounding at times, is now an incredibly easy sounding system, not fatiguing at all compared to what it sounded like. What has changed I hear you say? Well, nothing!  So now this got me thinking: I wonder if there is some truth to this whole "running in period" as many people keep talking about. To be honest, I think it is a load of bull (except for speakers of course). My speakers were secondhand, so these will probably be well "run in", so then what is it. Well, the only option is that there must be some psychoacoustical effect at play. Hmmmm....

The other day at my mates braai, I had a listen to his system again. He has the following:
Rotel RCD1072 CD Player
Rotel RC1090 Pre-amp
Rotel RB1090 Amp
B&W 703 Speakers

I must say, I really prefer the sound of my system. I wouldn't have in the beginning, but I definately do now. So, I asked myself how this can be. He has a really impressive system and I do like the components that he has used, so what is it?!? I couldn't answer it with any objective sounding explanation, so the only thing it could be is psychoacoustics, I believe. But is psychoacoustics so powerful that it could make you honestly believe that something is there that isn't. Or is my system really better than my mates' (I somehow don't think that's possible). Is it just 'cause I built it myself? Do all these audiofreaks have a point? Am I losing my mind?!?!?  :119:  :119:  :119:

To get to the point, I really DO like my system as it is now. Why that is, I don't know. I'm just glad that I didn't have to spend R100K to get something that could sound incredible and accomodate my preferences       Out of all of this the biggest surprise was those Jamo's of mine. I was impartial to them in the beginning, but I really do enjoy them...

Now I must finish with this project so I can start tinkering with speakers, amp and pre-amp for the music room :icon_naughty:  :icon_naughty:

PS. Sorry for the long post, I just had to keep you guys busy for at least 30mins :044:  :044:
