pure direct and movies

Why is it that movies sound so much better in pure direct? Specifically more fine detail and easily 100% more bass in some movies. Watching terminator salvation now and in movie mode its not very impressive. Pure direct and my couch is shaking!!!! So does this mean thx, dolby prologic and all the other " enhancement" settings are just a waist? Yes  blu-ray quality is significantly better than dvd, but why have all those functions when all they do is increase the cost of the receivers.
