Hello fellow DIY'ers

So, it?s about time that I raised my game a little bit in terms of my DIY / woodwork skills and I think my next project provides the perfect opportunity to do so. I want to try my hand at doing joins in wood, and from the research I have done it seems that doing so with biscuits seems the way to go.

Now, I have read a lot online and it doesn't look too hard, except for a few issues / questions.
1. I live in deepest darkest? from all the guides I have seen it looks like everyone had pre-made biscuits. Do people just buy pre-made biscuits or do they make them on their own?
2. The biscuits, do they have to be a particular type of wood or is it mostly irrelevant?
3. I only have a router, and have not seen a biscuit joiner for sale anywhere. How hard is it to do with a router provided I get that correct router bit?
4. If all of the above shows that this is going to be too much of a pain in the ass, should I rather look at using dowels and small drilled holes for simple joins instead?

Thanks in advance for your knowledge here... I foresee some fun projects coming up soon :)
