Thought I'd kick off a topic here based on a Blu-Ray I just watched.
The Lovely Bones. Definitely recommended, and a must for hi-def. The latest Peter Jackson, but not in the usual "King Kong" or "Lord of the Rings" blockbuster style. I say hi-def because of the beautiful score (must find a soundtrack cd) and the sweeping scenery that just begs for a massive 1080p screen. Recommended because of the storyline. Something different something new. Obviously it won't be everyone's cup of tea (nothing ever is) but without spoiling it, all I will say is that it is narrated by the pretty young teenager Suzy who is enjoying life in the early seventies. She just got a camera for her birthday, and has decided she wants to be a nature photographer. She is in love, and has her whole life in front her. She never thought that on her 14th birthday she'd be the subject of a vicious m......
quite a long movie (maybe too long?), the acting is mostly pretty good, Susan Sarandon brilliant as always, Rachel Weisz is ok. Mark Wahlberg is actually semi watchable for a change. Mostly drama, no action, gore or horror. Just found it a pretty different pretty good watch. And I HATE chick flicks, so there.
Why do I recommend it? I suppose it is because of the sense I get from the movie that my value system can sometimes still be skewed. Every now and again there are some poignant reminders that what we traditionally find to be most important (in movies or life) is maybe not as important as we might think it is. Sometimes what is past is past, and the values of new experiences and family and hope and love might be more important than vengeance and justice.
Rotten Tomato critics give it 31% (ouch!) and the Tomato community gives it 60% (phew!)
