I stumbled on the remarkable Sennheiser Ambeo. A pair of noise cancelling in ear headphones combined with ambisonic microphones. The recordings these produce with the absolute minimum off fuss is remarkable.

In true audiophile nerd fashion,the first thing I recorded was my hi-fi. I mean, really,how lame can  a person get! Still,hear what you think. It is ambisonic,so must be listened to on headphones. Also,please disregard the skew iphone picture:
