Replacement NIC modules for laptops

Are these generally easy to come by and cost effective to replace or hard to find and pricey?  I've got two laptops (both Dell) whose NICs struggle to establish robust connectivity to LAN cable. Occasionally I get gigabit, sometimes 100mb connection, but mostly no connectivity is the prevailing condition. If you do get connectivity don't dare move a thing.
