I have a couple of 5 kl tanks catching rainwater from my roof. I want to use this water in my washing machine as well as the dishwasher. In fact have been doing so until a couple months ago when water restrictions were reduced, i.o.w. we could use more water pppd. In the intervening period, algae appeared in spite of the tanks being lined with black plastic, reducing the effect of sunlight. What I plan to do now because we are exceeding the permissible amount is to start using the water again but I want to reduce the algae and prevent bacterial growth. I am pumping the water through a 20 micron in-line filter as well, but this gets clogged up rather fast because of the presence of algae and suspended sediment. For the suspended stuff I am going to add a flocculant (alum powder) so the filter can be used for a longer period.
My question is: how much chlorine compound (I currently have what is called HTH Shock it) can I add to the water (per 1 kl) that would still be safe for laundry?
